Fancy a new hobby, a chance to meet new people and the ability to play football without all the fast running about? Walking Football is one of the fastest growing leisure activities around today and the sport is currently played in twenty five different countries across the world.
The slower paced version of the game arrived in San Pedro Alcántara earlier this year and it is played every Tuesday evening from 8pm on the five a side pitches at the San Pedro football stadium, to the west of the town. It’s normally undertaken by people over the age of fifty who love the sport but find that their legs are no longer happy getting involved in sharp tackles and fast sprints in front of goal.
Walking Football is played as a five, six or seven a side game and teams are often made up of men and women who thoroughly enjoy the slower pace together. Its popularity keeps rising and there are reportedly over one thousand clubs in the UK alone, no doubt because all comers are welcome and there are few concerns about dangerous diving.
The evenings are a great opportunity to meet new people, play a sport you love and have a few beers and some socialising after the game. So if you are interested you can look forward to getting fit, scoring goals and having a good time. Just at a more gentle pace.
