Twenty-four hours of sport in San Pedro Alcántara

As residents of San Pedro Alcántara, most of us are grateful for the beautiful weather that allows outdoor exercise all year round. The well-maintained paseo is a delight for joggers – stopping along the way to pump iron at the outdoor gym or a dip in the sea when the summer sun is high.

San Pedro Alcántara town hall would like to see more residents taking part in sport though, and to this end are promoting the town’s 35th edition of ‘24 hours of sport’ on the 1st – 3rd June 2018. At a press conference arranged by Guillermo Granado, the councillor responsible for sport, and Miguel Peréz, who is organising the initiative, the announcement was made of an increase in budget allocation for the event from €6,000 the previous year to €9,000 this year. Local sports clubs have been encouraged to participate and the organisers were delighted to state that 2,500 residents have already subscribed, with the number expected to reach at least 3,000.

For the first time this year an official opening is to be held at the Palacio de los Deportes Elena Benítez where members of local rhythmic gymnastics, fencing, taekwando and kung-fu clubs aim to demonstrate their expertise.

Running over three days at various venues across the town, Saturday sees the Palacio de los Deportes once again taking centre stage for five-a-side football, basketball, tennis, Basque pelota and indoor climbing, while clay pigeon shooting, golf, athletics, volleyball and padel tennis will be outside events.

The Supera Sports Centre in Fuentenueva opens its outside swimming pool, whilst minority sports such as billiards, darts, table tennis and even dominoes will be hotly contested at various venues around San Pedro.  An international chess tournament is also expected to be organised thanks to the San Pedro Chess Club.

Peréz finally exhorted residents and neighbours to support the event and join in, stating that, “This year will be a big one in terms of the number of sports and the number of registered athletes, so our goal is to involve the public more, to help them feel this event is THE people’s sports festival.”

It looks like great fun, so keep your eyes open for events happening near to you!
