Spring is advancing and San Pedro Alcántara is back once again with the weather that we know and love – endless blue skies and sunny days. Thanks to the wonderful micro-climate afforded by the mountains that lend this place its stunning backdrop, the sun is expected to remain in situ for several months to come.
So, now is the time to take advantage of San Pedro’s charming beachside walk. A wide, marble-lined promenade, the path runs from La Pesquera restaurant and continues to Puerto Banús and on to Marbella for those looking to exercise or undertake a pleasant stroll with beautiful views across the Mediterranean Sea towards the coast of Africa.
Stay on the beach in San Pedro, though, and enjoy the lively atmosphere as both locals and visitors amble happily up and down the seafront walkway. On Sundays in particular, there is much to take in. Boutiques perfect for browsing are set up by independent stallholders, where a delightful range of items can be found, from original Panama hats to all manner of cheerfully coloured wooden toys.
A variety of restaurants line the paseo yet don’t overcrowd it, leaving plenty of space for lush grassy areas, happily shaded by palm trees. Try El Nini for typical Spanish seafood – delicious fresh fish dishes without pretension, or Nuevo Reino for a more formal atmosphere in a restaurant that is a San Pedro beachfront institution.
Alternatively, wait until the day becomes cooler and partake in the local tradition of la Moraga. With written permission from the Customer Service Office (Oficinas de Atención del Ciudadano) of the town hall, residents are able to use the sand-filled metal fishing boats on the beach for a traditional Andalusian barbecue.
Typically, sardines are cooked over a wood fire on espetos or wooden skewers, although other fish such as mackerel can be enjoyed. As only the boats are provided, take along all other provisions and bbq equipment – and most important of all, a group of friends with whom to share the convivial atmosphere!
