San Pedro’s Festival de Calle – 29 July-5 August 2018

Someone once described San Pedro Alcántara as a ‘sleepy little town’, but when you look at the programme of cultural events that form the Festival de Calle this summer, you realise it is just the opposite of sleepy. It includes theatre, dance, circus arts and puppetry workshops. What a fantastic opportunity to learn something new and have fun in the sun at the same time.

The festival starts on 29th July at 20:00hrs at the Circo Mediterráneo in Marqués del Duero after which you’ll be able to watch circus performances and on the following night as well, while on the same night at the boulevard there is a performance of ‘Mulïer’, a dance spectacular on stilts featuring five dancers.

There are circus workshops for would be performers during the day, and on the 30th July there will be a puppet theatre show by Circo-Teatro Pasacalles. In it, six people and a family of five creatures, some of them up to five metres in height, will explore a city in what promises to be a really exciting and unusual performance.

There is a story told by inflatable bulls as well as ‘Wet Floor’, a comedy with clowns, and a two-person performance about a circus family that combines humour and magic.

August gets off to a good start with ‘Piano:Piano’ by Lolo Fernández and Co., featuring an eccentric pianist who doesn’t seem to know whether he’s a musician or a clown, and more clown performances at other venues around the town.

There are also dance classes in Pasaje Robledano and a dance spectacular ‘Naufragio Universal’ about a shipwreck, and you can see dance and acrobatics combined in the Plaza de la Libertad.

The festival finishes on Sunday 5th August with a grand finale performed by Circo-Teatro Pasacalles titled ‘La Dama de Trapos’, which roughly translates as ‘The Rag Lady’. It’s about a small sewing workshop where every job for the seamstress just seems to carry on indefinitely. You’ll have to watch it to find out what happens to her.

The San Pedro streets where you’ll find performances as part of this festival are Plaza de las Iglesia, C/Revilla, C/Esteban San Mateo, Avda. De la Constitución, C/Jerez and Marqués del Duero.

See you there!
