Like all beaches on the Costa del Sol, in winter the San Pedro beach suffers from varying weather conditions that can prove to be devastating for the town’s seaside areas.
The town council’s beach clean-up delegation is working on a great idea to improve the beaches along the entire municipality, and has made a public tender for two stone removal machines that were tested at the beginning of this month.
In their efforts to clean-up and improve San Pedro’s coastline, the town council is searching for the best methods that work for all beach areas, improving the quality of the sand, which is San Pedro’s main income source through tourism, and therefore they are hoping to acquire the equipment as soon as possible. The machine, which sifts the sand and eliminates any large size stones, will cost around 60,000 euros. The town hall works hard to seek excellence through this kind of initiative, while moving ahead with the long-awaited ‘breakwater plan’ (espigones) to protect the sand from sea erosion is a project that is dependent on Spain’s central government.
The Ministry of the Environment is investing 600,000 euros to improve the municipality’s beaches, which is the largest amount to be invested in recent years, and while the project is shared over two areas: one in Marbella and Mijas and the other San Pedro and Estepona’s coast, it should be completed by the 10th of June.
