The Town Council is set to invest €170,000 across various projects to improve the condition of archaeological sites across Marbella. The deputy mayor of San Pedro Alcántara, Javier García, and General Director of Culture, José Antonio Moreno, have visited the Paleo Christian Basilica Vega del Mar in San Pedro to announce the work that has already started and future measures that will be put in place. Among them is the writing and creating of an informative text detailing all the sites history for an Interpretation Centre of Roman remains in the San Pedro town.
García has detailed that the budget for 2020 includes a total of €50,000 for the drafting of the Interpretation Centre project, “although authorisation from the General Directorate of Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía is first needed.” “The initiative will highlight the Villa Romana de Río Verde (Roman Villa of Río Verde), the Termas de las Bóvedas de Guadalmina (Baths of the Vaults of Guadalmina) and the Basílica Paleocristiana (Paleo Christian Basilica),” said the deputy mayor.
Likewise, “a guided tour and maintenance service for both the Basilica and the Roman Baths is currently being negotiated, with an investment of €118,000, spread over three years,” explained the municipal official, who has assured that the initiative is “very important as it will allow us to open the sites several days a week and be attended by professionals in the field.” As for the work that has already been done, García highlighted the cleaning and clearing of the Basilica site, which was carried out over three weeks by a specialised company. In addition, six information panels and one that includes the opening hours have been updated.
For his part, Moreno stressed that the Mayor’s Office, “is committed to the conservation and preservation of our archaeological remains,” and added that in the Roman baths “panel renovation and clearing work has also been carried out, which will intensify in the coming weeks.” Finally, he assured that “We want to work hand in hand with the Junta de Andalucía” with the Interpretation Centre project.
