As expected, the work to the main square in San Pedro, Plaza de la Iglesia, is almost complete and the area in front of the town’s parish church is looking more appealing with each passing week. Finishing touches to the main seating and some flowerbeds were made in time for the Easter holidays, and the community space is now blossoming with newly planted colourful plants.
Most pleasing is the introduction of creeping greenery at the base of the framework of the new red canopies, which will grow to interweave around the structure creating additional pleasantly shaded areas. This will surely alleviate the concerns of many locals who had worried that the red slatted sunshades were too modern, and that the plaza had lost some of it authentic beauty and character.
The walk-through water features are now up and running, creating an eye-catching promenade in front of the steps leading up to the church. Children, playful grown ups and anyone needing a cool down can skip or saunter amongst the modern fountains that are framed by interesting new and old architecture in and around the square. The undulating plumes of water are lit from underneath and this lighting will help the plaza to become an even more special and atmospheric setting at night.
The town hall will continue with its programme to finalise the redevelopment of the square, including planting flowers in the remaining flowerbeds and work on the new bandstand – which now allows access for wheelchairs.
The San Pedro Guide will bring you more news on the work at Plaza de la Iglesia soon!
