San Pedro beaches: Jellyfish out and new sand in!

On certain days last year we had to check community notices for jellyfish warnings in the waters around San Pedro, to make sure we avoided being stung while swimming in our lovely bay. It’s true it wasn’t a weekly event, but the Mediteranean has experienced a large increase in numbers of the see-through pests in recent years to make it a slight concern for beachgoers.

This year the local authorities in Marbella are taking steps to address any significant problem that an unwelcome bloom of jellyfish might cause swimmers, by ascertaining jellyfish-free zones in the vicinity. Working in partnership with operators of local waterside activities, and using nets and floats, the council will establish safe swimming zones that people can use on days when the jellyfish are around.

The helpful initiative will be implemented on San Pedro beach and other parts of the coast near Puerto Banús, Estrella de Mar and Marbella Playa in Las Chapas.

In other positive news for our seafront is the emergency work being carried out by the townhall to tackle damage caused by recent bad weather conditions. Unusually large waves battered certain areas along the beachfront and even reached the new pedestrian footpath that joins San Pedro to Ventura del Mar. So much sand was washed away in Lindavista, at the Estepona end of the beach, that sewage pipes have been exposed. With Easter just around the corner, local authorities are working quickly to deliver sand and other materials to replace the lost ground and restore affected spots to their normal condition.

Keep checking in with the San Pedro Guide for more community information about Easter and the summer ahead!
