The popularity of quizzes is at an all time high with regular TV shows like Egg Heads, The Chase, Pointless and countless other daytime brainteasing programmes. With lots of new and existing lovers of different quiz formats, we have also seen a surge in the attendance of pub quizzes.
Thankfully residents of Marbella and in particular San Pedro, can exercise those grey cells on a weekly basis with a pub quiz at the Hogan Stand Irish pub.
For eight years now, Hannah Murray, breakfast show presenter at the popular Talk Radio Europe radio station, has hosted a regular quiz every Thursday at the Hogan Stand. It has become an important part of the week for many regulars as they grab their table and form their teams ready to compete with other avid quizzers.
It is more than just a quiz, it is a great night out as it is a lively, fun and buzzy atmosphere. With maximum teams of six contestants there are several rounds of questions to test the participants. A joker round means there are double points up for grabs on a team’s chosen subject and a longshot question provides the chance to win a special, edible fun prize each week.
The overall winning team every Thursday gets a 40€ voucher to spend on food and drink at the pub or in it’s restaurant and the second placed team will win a bottle of wine and box of chocolates to share. There is also an extra quiz which is the ‘money round’. This is formed of 6 questions from a Trivial Pursuit card that Hannah chooses and, if a team gets all six questions correct, they win the money that is currently in the pot. If it is not won it will roll over to the following week. Because of this format there is often 400€ up for grabs!
As well as the weekly pub quiz at the Hogan Stand Hannah also hosts a monthly quiz at Urban Chai, San Pedro. It is the same format and another popular night out, with some teams travelling down from Fuengirola and Guaro to participate. Prizes are the same as in the Hogan Stand.
The cost for the quiz at both venues is just 2€ per person and an extra euro for the money round. Even if you don’t have a team you can turn up as there will always be a team you can join. Please note that you will need to book a space at Urban Chai as spaces are limited, and usually full.
For more information look for the Facebook Page Hannah’s Quiz Night, which will keep you informed of both venues.
