The deputy mayor of San Pedro Alcántara, Rafael Piña, presented the work for the remodeling of the Plaza de la Iglesia at the top of the pedestrianised zone in San Pedro. It was indicated during this presentation that the project “is an ambitious action, that will make the square more accessible, functional and modern, creating new areas of enjoyment for the the residents”.
Piña, accompanied by one of the architects who designed the project, Carlos Herrera, explained that “the most supported proposal within the budgets of 2016 in San Pedro was only the expansion of the shaded areas of the Plaza of the Church and as a result, we decided to do a more complete study and solve structural problems that also affect the area.”
He specified that there are areas badly damaged by water leaks that occur in the underground parking and therefore the entire plaza will be covered to make it completely waterproof by way of wedding and joining the structures that already exist. In addition, all infrastructures will be renewed, including the sanitation network.
With regard to the sun shaded areas in the Plaza, the work includes installing a series of posts that can be inserted or removed depending on the needs, as sometimes there is a requirement for extending a large area of canvases in the central and northeast part of the plaza. It also extends the urban furniture and green areas in more modern style while respecting the existing trees.
Piña has pointed out that there have also been lots of demands for more space for the organisation of events because the fountain and the temple make space very limited. To achieve this, a new organic structure, with curved shapes that are meant to replicate a wave in the sea will open the ‘angles of vision’ and will be installed on the east-west axis. In addition the design of the plaza will also enhance the north-south axis that goes from the pedestrian entrance to the Mayor’s Office.
