San Pedro de Alcántara is gearing up to celebrate Pedal Day on November 26, with the dual objective of promoting cycling and fostering environmental sustainability. The Deputy Mayor of Sampedreño, Javier García, and the Sports Councillor, Lisandro Vieytes, unveiled the event earlier during the week of 13 November 2023. The event is set to ‘pedal’ off at 11.00 am from the Plaza de la Iglesia and will finish at La Salida beach. Joining them were the presidents of the local clubs DC Los Jululus and MTB 29SEIS70, Manuel García and Salvador Gamarro.
They announced that registration will take place between 9.00 am and 11.00 am at the Church plaza, will be free of charge. However, participants are required to contribute a plastic container for recycling.
García remarked, “It’s an event that has become a tradition in San Pedro,” highlighting the desire for a connection between physical activity and the environment, considering cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation. He encouraged participation and announced trophies for the oldest and youngest participants, as well as for the most original and oldest bicycle. Additionally, there will be a raffle for gifts among the participants.
Vieytes explained that all registered participants will receive a ‘welcome pack’ containing a commemorative T-shirt for the event. He underscored the importance of “nurturing a love for cycling among the younger generation.” The councillor clarified that Pedal Day is not an official competition but an opportunity for families to enjoy the sport together, with a “simple and enjoyable” route.
Closing the presentation, the president of DC Los Jululus urged citizens to join and said there is a possibility of his participation with a 60-year-old bicycle that once featured in the Tour de France. Meanwhile, his MTB counterpart 29SEIS70 affirmed that “everyone who signs up is guaranteed to have a fantastic time.”
