An improved cycle lane near the centre of San Pedro has created a more pleasant and safer pathway for cyclists, whilst allowing for the provision of additional free car parking spaces. Announcing the completion of the works undertaken on Avenida del Mediterráneo that leads down to the beach, the mayor’s office of San Pedro Alcántara has highlighted the commercial and environmental positives of the new cycle way.
“Bike rides will be even more pleasant as the lane now flows through nature and under the shadow of trees,” explained Deputy Mayor Rafael Piña in a recent statement. The circuit has been appealingly decorated with 1,500 perennial plants and it no longer shares the road with motor vehicles ensuring it is far safer for every user. Having been built using green materials the pathway has naturally integrated into the town’s ‘green zone’ therefore reducing its impact on the surrounding environment.
The new 230 metre cyclepath is located within one of the fastest growing commercial areas of San Pedro that has been in need of extra parking space due to the recent establishment of new shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels. Therefore it has been advantageous that the reconstruction work on the cycle lane has also created 40 free parking spaces adding to the 30 already existing on Avenida Juan Vargas. The mayor’s office has confirmed that there are now a total of 570 new parking spaces “in the vicinity of downtown San Pedro.”
The integration of the bike lane within Avenida del Mediterráneo is the first phase of a larger town development project intended to unite the centre of San Pedro with the beach and seafront promenade.
Other works being carried out this summer by the San Pedro’s town hall include improvements to its outdoor exercise area, the park’s irrigation system and the replacement of lighting and painting in the auditorium on the boulevard.
