San Pedro Alcántara to Welcome New Municipal Library as Construction Begins This Summer
A brand-new municipal library is set to be built in San Pedro Alcántara, Marbella, with construction scheduled to begin this summer. The project, which comes with an investment of 3.9 million euros, is expected to take 18 months to complete. The library will be located within the Jorge Lorenzo Tejada park (see embedded map below), allowing it to be surrounded by green spaces and natural scenery.
Javier García, deputy mayor of San Pedro, explained that the design incorporates the regeneration of a neglected amphitheatre, which inspired the building’s distinctive cylindrical shape. “This will be a space for culture, education, and leisure, nestled among trees and greenery,” he told SUR.
García also emphasised the town’s commitment to constructing visually striking buildings that contribute to the local identity. “Our goal is to create modern, standout public spaces rather than plain, uninspiring structures,” he said, stressing the importance of architectural innovation in the town’s development.
Library Design and Features
The new facility will be constructed using concrete and will feature an external protective layer that minimises the impact of sunlight, improving energy efficiency. The building will have two separate entrances, providing access to the two main floors while ensuring full compliance with accessibility standards.
Inside, the library will be divided into two levels. The upper floor will feature a spacious central area for general use, alongside a dedicated children’s section. The lower floor will accommodate a study space, a conference hall, and the main service desk for borrowing and returning books.
One of the key features of the design is the flexibility of the lower level, which can be accessed directly from the park and used independently of the upper floor. This allows it to function as a standalone study area or be opened for special events. Meanwhile, the main entrance to the upper floor will be located on Calle San Javier.
Additionally, the library’s rooftop will be open to the public, accessible via a staircase-terrace near the upper entrance. Both primary access points have been designed to accommodate individuals with reduced mobility and will also serve as emergency exits.
This library project forms part of a broader municipal investment plan for San Pedro Alcántara, which also includes the construction of a new centre for older residents and a music and dance school.
