San Pedro Alcántara enjoys the ideal situation as, although a small town, it is set just ten kilometres from the glamorous Marbella, a few minutes’ drive from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda, and only 20 minutes from Estepona. Over the past few years it has undergone extensive remodelling and its ‘facelift’ is continuing with the on-going expansion of pedestrian areas, new businesses opening, and the soon to be finished central Town Hall square and tourist office.
Added to this, by encouraging the use of bikes San Pedro is promoting environmentally friendly mobility—as cycling is probably the most sustainable urban transport for leisurely routes or medium-distance trips. Cycling promotes physical activity, is excellent for your health and causes practically no environmental damage, at the same time it’s a very economical activity compared to joining the gym or undertaking other sports. It is also an ideal time to spend together with friends and family.
San Pedro currently has around seven kilometres of bicycle lanes, large blue cycle paths popular with both cyclists and rollerblades alike. Starting from the central boulevard, which is two kilometres if you choose to go all the way around it. But if you wish to stretch your cycling route further, you can also go all the way down to the beach promenade using the cycle lanes in Avda. del Mediterraneo, pedal alongside the beach promenade and all the way back up again to the town centre, via the streets of Av. Salamanca, Avda. Lyon and Avda. Burgos, depending on your preference. As a warning, always be alert when using the cycle paths, as you can never assume that they are free from pedestrians!
For those who don’t have their own bikes you can rent cycles at Yep Bike, or for the more adventurous, Bicitur offer exciting cycling routes to other villages. For the little ones, there are fun scooters, tricycles and karts on the main boulevard,
One promising route we are waiting to find out about is the connection of the last section on the beach promenade, which will re-connect San Pedro’s promenade to Puerto Banús and all the way to Marbella. So watch this space as we hope to let you know as soon as there are any developments!
