These two Spanish words are frequently heard in Málaga, especially during the summer season and San Pedro Alcántara is no exception. The word Espeto comes from the verb ‘espetar’ – to skewer. This cooking method is typical of this area and refers to five or six fresh sardines (it’s vital that they’re fresh!), which are cooked over a pit of coals, adding only as seasoning a little sea salt and a drizzle of olive oil. It’s a delicious treat and is usually enjoyed by tourists but even more so by locals. Sardines are also very nutritious being very high in Omega 3 and a good source of vitamin B and iron, as well as low in calories.
Moraga is the word used for a popular night-time beach party, which generally includes a barbecue of either fish or meat, drinks etc. On San Pedro’s beach, the Moraga’s are celebrated using metal boats that are filled up with sand and specially prepared for barbecues for use of which you need to gain a permit first.
In order to do this you must go to San Pedro’s ‘Ayuntamiento’ (town hall) at the Plaza de la Iglesia, and fill in a document from the Health and Environment Delegation that is downloadable on the following link, or just pop into the Oficina de Atención al Cuidadano (Customer Care), and fill in the form there and then. It all sounds a bit complicated but the boats are in great demand, so just submit your contact details, and they can tell you immediately if there is a boat available.
