Following on from our recent blog about community rubbish and recycling bins in San Pedro, we are now turning our attention to the disposal of vegetation refuse from gardens. This type of waste management is strictly a private affair and not one that the town hall provides a free community collection service for.
It’s important that after you’ve finished successfully pruning your hedges and digging up weeds, you are sensible about how the leafy remains are disposed of, as there are a few strict rules in play. This also includes regulations about the cutting down of trees and other more extensive work in your garden, which, if ignored, could result in a large fine.
Below is some advice and a few do’s and don’ts for you to follow:
What should residents do with their garden waste?
DO NOT: throw garden waste inside, or leave it next to, the community street bins
DO NOT: deposit it on someone else’s property!
DO: hire a company that specialises in waste management to dispose of it for you
or
DO: take it to the Environmental Centre (Carretera de Ojén), which will accept it free of charge
What happens if you need to do extensive work on trees on private property?
An official document called a ‘Municipal Licence for Minor Works’ is required for the felling, transplanting, topping and crown reduction of privately owned trees. This licence can be requested at the town hall building in Plaza de los Naranjos in Marbella town.
Failure to comply with this rule can lead to a fine of up to €3,000 euros.

Is it ok to burn garden rubbish?
It is strictly forbidden to burn garden rubbish remains in an urban area or on developable land, without prior written permission from local authorities.
The approval process requires several important and detailed documents relating to the property and surrounding land, as well as approvals and compliances from the council. This is particularly important in relation to forested areas.
