Summer is in full bloom, children are on school holidays and everyone is enjoying the fantastic Costa del Sol weather. So if you fancy having a day out here are some suggestions for you within driving distance of San Pedro for an afternoon or a full day visiting many of the interesting places that are based at one to two hours distance from our town.
Málaga is currently hosting some fantastic exhibitions, with the internationally renowned artist known as Banksy: The Art of the Protest exhibition running until 15 th September. Showcasing at La Térmica, it is hosted within a characteristic building from 1907 that was originally a convent, then a hospice and after a printers. (Check online as there are often special offers for tickets).
Lego: the largest Lego exhibition in Europe is in Málaga until 22 nd September, with a Titanic boat built with half a million bricks, a sports alley with famous athletes in human size models, large buildings depicting ancient and modern architecture such as the Taj Majal, The Tower of London and the Roman Forum, robot zone, Star Wars district, Thor and Captain America super heroes, a fairy tale area including Harry Potter and many other subjects and characters.
Málaga’s white villages: surrounding San Pedro there are many charming villages tucked away from the busy coast, so if you wish to see interesting villages we would recommend visiting Tarifa – with its hippy chic vibe and beautiful golden sands that stretch for over ten kilometres. Casares – explore the mountain village and its historical castle, Setenil de las Bodegas – a unique village that has houses built into caves emerging from the rocks, and is great for tapas and wine tasting. Medina Sidonia – an ancient hilltop village with an important history dating back to the 15 th century involving the Spanish Armada, ideal for history lovers.
Ronda: besides its historical charm, this town is famous for its breath-taking views, with dramatic cliff views down to El Tajo river gorge. Its bullring and museum, where the likes of Hemingway and Ava Gardner spent their evenings, and historical cobbled streets, plazas and unique alleys to wander around. The town is full of historical buildings dating back to the 16 th century, as well as excellent wine bars and restaurants, a place not to be missed.
If you prefer something different, there’s a butterfly park in Benalmádena, right next to one of Spain’s largest Buddhist temples, a trip to Estepona and its orchidarium set in the centre of town has 1,300 species and over 5,000 plants, boat trips from Marbella or Puerto Banús that take you to visit dolphins sailing towards Gibraltar, a jet boat ride – adrenaline filled fun for all with 360-degree spins departing from Marbella port…and so many other wonderful places and
