Local authorities in San Pedro do a great job of providing communal street bins for waste and recycling purposes, ensuring that each household only has a short distance to cover to dispose of rubbish and recyclable materials.
The signage and instructions on each dustbin can be slightly confusing though: for instance, can you put aerosols in with plastics? Does every paper product go in the blue bin?
To help clarify things, the San Pedro Guide has double checked the usage of each container, and the details are listed below.
Blue container: paper and cardboard products: magazines, newspapers, boxes and all paper and cardboard packaging.
Yellow container: plastics and some metals: metal containers, tin cans, plastic bags, plastic bottles, laminated cartons used for milk, fruit juice etc.
Dark green container: this dustbin is for organic matter, where you can dispense with leftover food, used diapers, vegetable peeling etc, but not for these food items still in a plastic or glass container.
Light green container: for the disposal of glass, most obviously in the shape of bottles, glasses or jam jars – however, be careful not to include mixed glass based products like mirrors, as these can contaminate the glass recycling process.
Beige/light brown container: presently manufactured in a large square form, residents can use these bins to deposit any type of clothing or footwear that is no longer of use.
