San Pedro Alcántara is well loved for its community spirit, venues and events. Throughout the year the whole town convenes for occasions such as its ‘feria’, the bonfires of San Juan and the hippy arts festival on the beach.
San Pedro always seems to be creating new indoor and outdoor activities that the general public can enjoy. The wonderful boulevard, with its own mini venues incorporated within its pathways, being one of the most remarkable to join the list.
Just a few minutes walk from the boulevard and famous bridge is another interesting and well established community focal point: the Club de Padel y Tenis, located in the area called Nueva Alcántara. If you haven’t yet seen or heard of the racquet sport ‘padel’ tennis (a sort of hybrid of tennis and squash) you can view it easily from the road outside the club, which overlooks its outdoor courts.
Padel is an entertaining sport that was invented in Mexico in the late 1960’s and although mainly played in Hispanic countries like Argentina, Mexico, Spain and Andorra, it is currently becoming more popular across Europe. The Nueva Alcántara clubhouse rents out courts, runs courses for all levels and offers various membership deals to the public who want to play the game and also use its modern amenities.
When you step inside the building you realise that this club has so much more to offer than just a sport played with a string racquet. The gym facilities in the basement provide every kind of fitness equipment and rooms where exercise classes are undertaken, and the beauty salon provides hair and skin treatments to anyone wanting a bit of pampering.
Central to the venue is the lovely terrace area on the main floor that also overlooks the padel courts. The ambience and service here is extremely friendly and the food and drinks are unexpectedly good for a place that from first impressions, you would think would focus mainly on sport. This is a genuinely lovely place to meet people and socialise, a spot where you can happily while away a few hours whilst listening to the sound of bat on ball…and have a good think about getting some exercise at some point :)e a good think about getting some exercise at some point 🙂
