The Spanish national health service is a wonderful resource for locals and expats alike, with modern facilities such as online booking and access to medical records, as well as a downloadable app that keeps all aspects of a patient’s health-care in one easily-accessible place. For emergencies and outpatient treatment, the walk-in clinic in San Pedro Alcántara is a great asset and its location close to the San Pedro boulevard couldn’t be more convenient. It was given a boost recently, following news that work is to begin that will see the centre triple in size by next summer.
Investment is already generating improvements as earlier this year radiology equipment worth €70,000 was installed, including desks that enable better communication management with the public. The Emergency Department will have a new queue administration system meaning greater accessibility and security for patients, who will be assigned a number on arrival so names won’t be called out in the waiting area. Staff will later confirm the identity of patients with computer records so mistakes are not made as the patient progresses through the system. A number on a screen will help the hard of hearing, as well as stating the location of the room they are to attend.
The centre will cover 3,441 square metres and will be designed to cope with the 45,000 locals in the area. A total of twenty-four adult consulting rooms are planned as well as four designated for children. An orthodontic surgery joins a mental health facility, physiotherapy service and further new equipment for minor operations on the list of improvements to the centre.
We hope we don’t need it, but if we do, it’s reassuring to know we’ll be welcomed into a new state-of-the-art medical facility!
