Climbing Walls Reopen

Climbers and fans of climbing have some great news here in San Pedro de Alcantara. The Ayuntamiento is re-opening the ‘El tornillo’ (the screw) along with two other climbing surfaces, the ‘Roco’ and ‘La cueva del Palacio de los Deportes Elena Benítez (The Cave of the Palace of Sports Elena Benítez).

It is an important re-opening in San Pedro as the climbing walls are considered some of the best in Europe. The deputy mayor Javier García visited the climbing apparatus and said “today is an important day, because we are talking about one of the most important climbing walls in Europe that had been closed to the public for more than 14 years.”

García, who has been accompanied by the mayor of Sports Activities of San Pedro Alcántara, Javier Mérida, and the secretary of the Alpine Club Ama Dablam, Manolo (Lolo) González, pointed out that this re-opening is “outstanding and so important in the world of climbing”. He has also stated that this is a second phase of the work carried out in 2019 and went on to say “work has been carried out on the structure on 5,000 square metres, all the interiors and exteriors have been cleaned, a perimeter fence has been erected in the area to the west and a ramp has also been installed. The action has led to the replacement of the elements of the relevant climbing structures that were in poor condition and the removal of rust.” added García.

The mayor stated that the reopening of these surfaces is possible “thanks to the work that has been done from the Sports area of San Pedro Alcántara and the collaboration of the Alpine Club Ama Dablam. Both this climbing wall and the one located in the Paco Cantos sports centre are perfect for all those who want to climb with all the necessary security measures”. He also stated that they have ensured that the equipment may also be used by many children from different municipal schools. “These enhancement actions demonstrate the firm commitment of the Marbella City Council and the Mayor’s Office for the improvement of sports facilities in San Pedro de Alcantara”.
