Charity initiatives you can get involved in during lockdown

During lockdown it is normal to feel a sense of hopelessness, confined to our homes it is difficult to make a change and help those who are suffering the worst from the situation and are in need of much support. However, it is important not to lose the act of giving as charity beings at home. Even in the era of social distancing, we can still connect with our neighbours and offer support to those in need.

The coast is home to thousands of senior citizens, considered the most vulnerable group, and many of them rely on the assistance and services of local charitable associations

Most of these charities are trying to continue to help those in need during these difficult times, but the disruption is having a direct effect on the services they can offer. You can help alleviate some of the pressure by helping out in your own family and community, especially those that live alone, by offering to do their food shopping or collecting medication from pharmacies, as well as walking pets to minimize their exposure to the virus. Also, any donations to local charities stepping up to help, such as Age Concern and the Cudeca Hospice, goes a long way.

Another big impact you could have but is often overlooked, is supporting local businesses, especially restaurants. Most restaurants across the coast have closed their doors in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. It’s not an easy decision, but it’s the right thing to do, as social distancing is essential in helping to control this pandemic. Although you might not be able to visit your favourite local restaurant for a while, many of them are offering takeaway and home delivery, so you can self-isolate with your favourite food! For you it’s simply a food order but for the restaurant, it could be the difference between their survival as a business and staying closed forever.

From lending a hand to local charities, donating money and supporting local business, there are many ways to get involved. Be assured that any support you can offer to organisations and groups at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 is positive and impactful, no matter how big or small.
