Christmas presents and gifts by ASPANDEM

Poinsettias are very popular during the Christmas season and are typically given as presents as their deep red colour makes them the ideal ornament for any home at this Christmas. Also, they can withstand minimum temperatures of -2 degrees and with the correct care can reach up to five metres high. In Spain, they are called ‘pascueros’, also known as ‘flor de pascua’, and can already bee found for sale in most local flower shops and garden centres. But we think the ideal place to purchase them is from local charity Aspandem.

As mentioned in an earlier blog, Aspandem is a non-profitmaking association that supports both children and adults with disabilities. They have an excellent ‘vivero’ garden centre that is open Monday to Friday from 9:30hrs to 17:30hrs. So why not pop over and see their varied selection of plants and readymade baskets, many with the lovely poinsettias ready for a special present or perfect gift.

If you are also looking for a specific plant, you can speak with them and they will search whatever you need, and they also offer a home delivery service should you purchase a large amount of heavy products or big plants. The garden centre is just on the edge of town in the La Campana industrial area, Avenida Principe de Asturias. Telephone: 952 787 650.

Aspandem also has two kiosks in the San Pedro town centre, one at the top of C/Lagasca, just a little further up from Maskom supermarket (pasaje Robledano), where the members sell their handmade gifts, made at the occupational centre and training workshops.

The other kiosk is situated on the main street, Avda. Marques del Duero, in front of Unicaja and the main pharmacy, where they sell plants and flowers, and especially now, the much loved Pascueros or poinsettias that add colour to the green kiosks. They are both open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30h to 13:30h, or at San Pedro’s market on Thursdays, if it doesn’t rain.

Buying your plants and gifts from Aspandem has many benefits, in addition to donating to a worthwhile local charity, you are helping to give employment to a large number of people with disabilities, and enabling them training opportunities and access to the labour market.
