Urban Chai is a great new addition to San Pedro’s ever growing restaurant scene. It’s located on Centro Comercial La Petunias, just along from Supersol.
It’s run by Neil Sweeting (one of the four initial founders of the hugely successful restaurant chain Terra Sana), and his business partner Carla—who he and his wife Dalit met at anti-natal classes! Carla moved to the coast from Barcelona about 7 years ago, and Neil has lived here for 18 years.
Neil explains:
“Urban Chai has a real family feel to it. Both Carla and I have kids, and when the guys and I set up Terra Sana in 2000 our lives were very different!”
The restaurant is conveniently located just off the main A7 road, by the Ronda roundabout and directly opposite is a children’s playground. It’s also on a no-through road, which makes it very safe for kids to go from the restaurant to the playground without parents having to worry about them crossing a busy road.
While I was there having breakfast, four or five different people came in for a drink or some food, all of whom knew Neil, and wanted to pop in to check the place out. You can see that as well as catering for tourists (there were a couple having breakfast when I arrived, who were here on holiday), they really want to look after the locals, and understand the importance of keeping them happy in the winter months when there are less tourists around.
It is obvious how passionate both Neil and Carla are about creating a happy and relaxed environment, and Neil talked to me about the importance of having fresh produce, and how they plan to develop the menu.
Urban Chai is beautifully decorated; a homely and welcoming feel, with an urban twist (keeping in line with the name!)
I was really excited to see Eggs Benedict on the menu (often hard to come by here), and they also offer it with spinach instead of ham, which I decided to go for.
Well, it was delicious. The flavour of the sauce was divine (freshly made, of course), and the eggs were cooked perfectly, with the yolk oozing out over the muffins.
I am looking forward to seeing what more they’re going to offer, as I can see that this is going to become a regular weekend breakfast haunt for us, and have already recommended it to many friends. The breakfast menu is actually served all day, so if you’ve had a heavy night, you can make it ‘brunch’!
I had eggs benedict, 2 coffees and an orange juice for just over €10, so the prices are also very reasonable.
With the end of summer looming the return of the popular Hannah Murray monthly quiz night starts from September.
