1,500 students from San Pedro and Marbella have benefited from a 99% discount on university tuition

During the past academic year there were a total of 1,500 students from Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara who benefited from the 99% discount on university fees, with the figure at a provincial level of 14,000, and regional level at 87,000 students.

“Studying in Andalucía is a right not a privilege, regardless of the economic resources of each family. In Andalucía there are equal opportunities for students to access university training. Furthermore, Andalucía has the lowest university fees in Spain, as students pay half of what they do in Barcelona or Madrid,” explained Ana Villarejo, the general secretary of the Socialist Youth organisation.

In addition, the Socialist Youth organisation will be visiting universities during September to explain the different measures through which students can benefit. These include grants that are offered to Erasmus students as well as other scholarships.

Socialist spokesman for Marbella, José Bernal, also mentioned that the school year will be marked by “more teachers, more places and, more attention and preparation for students.” Andalucía is the autonomous community that “has presented the largest number of public examinations for new secondary teachers in Spain, something that we will see very positive results from in this coming school year.”

According to Sr. Bernal, “the Spanish average is 12 applicants per university place, while in Andalucía the figure decreases to five per place,” adding that “the places offered this year total 5,404 in Andalucía.”

Marcos Ruiz, Secretary of Education in Málaga, highlighted the work that the Ministry of Education has carried out over the summer season, removing asbestos from different educational centres. “Europe gave us a margin up to 2028 to eliminate it and in Málaga, in a matter of a couple of years, we will have eradicated it.”

Likewise, Ruiz took the opportunity to point out that the air-conditioning for centres in central areas has begun, “due to their higher temperatures,” to be followed by centres located on the coast, which will certainly improve educational activity.
